We are looking for someone who is committed to solving problems and creating a place where engineers can play more active roles in the company.Mercari's engineering organization has members from a variety of backgrounds. Our managers lead teams with diversified experiences, nationalities, cultures, etc., and are responsible for drawing out the full potential of the teams and individuals, as well as producing greater results. The main components of the role are as follows:

Looking for someone who can commit to the goal of maximizing the engineering team’s output

This position is a management role with the main purpose of maximizing the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team’s output

The SRE team builds servers and networks for the Mercari app, automates systems, and handles outages while also developing and operating software to increase system performance, reliability, and scalability

SRE engineering managers must work with the team to propose and implement measures to support team members, nurture their professional growth, and expand the team as a whole; and by doing so ensure that the SRE team functions effectively across Mercari as a whole and contributes towards maximizing the output of the company

Planning and promoting measures to help the SRE team members fulfill their roles
Developing and promoting a long-term vision and roadmap for Mercari’s systems

Planning and promoting measures to increase system performance, reliability, and scalability

Proposing and implementing strategies to solve problems and improve the engineering organization, such as:
Proposing and developing new tech projects (projects by the engineering teams) with team members

Planning and running internal events (EM Philosophy Talk, Lunch & Learn, etc.) with the aim of sharing knowledge and increasing understanding of the organization

Participating in hiring and PR activities to grow the engineering organization

Maximizing engineering output and encouraging career growth through tasks such as:
Handling goal setting and evaluations for engineer growth each quarter, in addition to holding 1-on-1 meetings for regular communication and feedback

Assigning projects and roles to engineers, considering future career growth

Required Experience

Basic understanding of TCP/IP, HTTP, and other network protocols

Programming ability sufficient to build any applications or middleware necessary to fix bugs or improve system performance and reliability

Ability to trace and solve technical issues (performance drops, etc.)

Management experience such as mentoring engineers and working on projects across teams

Preferred Experience

Ability to communicate in English

EDesigning system architecture

Making technical decisions for a team as a tech lead

Hiring engineers (screening applications, interviewing, direct recruiting, hosting events, etc.)

Screening Criteria

Capable of understanding project priorities and assigning engineers appropriately

Possesses extensive technological expertise and desire to learn new technologies

Capable of understanding individual engineer’s motivations and encouraging both their personal growth and that of the business

Possesses strong communication ability to solve organizational problems

Employment Status

Full-timeProbationary period: First 3 months after joining the company. (During this period your contract conditions will be the same as that of a permanent employee.)

Scheduled working hours: 10 AM – 7 PM

Currently, due to COVID-19 pandemic, we have introduced a full-flex system without core time to increase the choice of working hours and allow for more flexible working styles.(*does not apply to all positions)


Two days off per week (as well as national holidays, New Year's break, etc.)

Annual salary paid in 12 installments (monthly)
