Details of the offer

Yayasan Konservasi Alam Nusantara (YKAN) is a non-profit organization established and registered under the laws of the Republic of Indonesia. It has a mission to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends. YKAN is an affiliate of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a science-based organization and experienced in advancing conservation throughout the world since 1951. To achieve this mission YKAN supports Indonesia’s efforts to tackle climate change and achieve emission reduction target stated on Indonesia’s Nationally determined contribution (NDC).
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and partners have reported that through a set of “natural climate solutions” (NCS), the land sector has the potential to deliver more than one-third of near term cost-effective global emission reductions to hold global warming below 2°C. Yet, the maximum and economically viable mitigation potentials from NCS strategies are still unclear on Indonesia’s NDC. Through NCS4NDC work in Indonesia, we aim to provide the scientific basis for government decision makers in Indonesia to enhance the contribution of emissions reductions from the forestry sector to achieve the Paris Agreement goals by mobilizing a stronger set of NCS initiatives and contributions through updated NDCs in the coming years.
To start this project, in collaboration with Center for Socio-Economic Research and Development, Policy and Climate Change (P3SEKPI) at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MOEF), we organized a national kick off workshop titled “Unlocking the Mitigation Potential of Natural Climate Solutions in Indonesia” on 21
January 2020 in Bogor. The workshop discussed seven prioritized NCS pathways in Indonesia including: reforestation, natural forest management, avoided forest conversion, avoided peat impacts, peat restoration
from the perspective of science, economics and policy. As a follow-up, YKAN, in collaboration with MOEF, is currently conducting further analysis on avoided peat emissions, avoided deforestation, natural forest management and restoration.
Indonesia is the country with the world’s largest mangrove area, yet this ecosystem has the highest deforestation rate among others in the country. This situation places this ecosystem either an effective carbon sink or an important carbon source depends on how this ecosystem is managed. Potential emission reduction on mangrove pathways based on the global analysis study (Griscom et al 2017) is underestimated especially for Indonesia. Hence, this number need to be refined using the best available data at national level (Tier 2) in addition to other scientific publications. It should be noted that the quantification of maximum potential emission reduction from this ecosystem should be carefully defined to avoid double counting and consider future food demand and aquaculture national planning.

The overall objective of this consulting assignment is to provide high quality scientific and policy advice to YKAN and Indonesian national experts for refining potential emission reduction from avoided mangrove loss and mangrove restoration pathways.
Specifically, the scientific consultancy will include the following tasks:
A scientific advisor (national or international) will work with YKAN and researchers from MOEF to quantify potential emission reduction and its uncertainty from avoided mangrove loss and mangrove restoration pathways. The calculation will use data activity and emission factor at Tier 2 level and the results will be published in scientific journal. This collaboration will be done through a series of virtual meetings, report review, consultation and dialogues with key stakeholders. The scientific advisor will lead manuscript writing in particular of mangrove section and work collaboratively with other scientists to finalize a comprehensive paper on opportunities from main NCS pathways in Indonesia.
The consultancy is expected to take a total of 20 working days

The consultants shall be paid the consultancy fee upon completion of the following milestones
50% after contract signing
50% after completion, submission and acceptance all of deliverables

Qualified and interested candidates are hereby requested to apply (either as a team or individually). The application should contain the following:
