Position Overview
Work Responsibilities
We are looking for a specialist to lead overall AML/CFT and financial risk management work for Merpay’s payment, credit, and crypto-asset trading businesses.
The AML & Financial Risk Management Team’s mission is “strengthen and continue to grow the compliance framework which forms the bedrock of Mercari and Merpay’s business.” This means our work goes beyond individual organizations and teams.
It is essential that Merpay, as a company operating finance-related businesses, further strengthen AML/CFT management frameworks and implement measures to appropriately protect users’ and Merpay’s assets from criminal and fraudulent operations, as well as mitigate risk of money laundering, financing of terrorist operations, and other criminal activity.
As the second line of defense, you will promote a variety of AML/CFT and financial risk management-related measures and plans, as well as support and contribute effective leadership to the upper management and business teams.
Specifically, you will:
Decide policy and implement countermeasures as part of AML/CFT frameworks and anti-fraud measures
Analyze suspicious transactions (from the perspectives of AML, CFT, and anti-social forces) and consider appropriate countermeasures
Collect and summarize matters to be reported to top management
Decide policy and countermeasures related to the exclusion of anti-social forces
Decide policy with regards to adding to, deleting from, or correcting monitoring rules/operational flows
Decide policy with regards to adding to or correcting CDD/KYC standards
Decide policy with regards to adding to or correcting standards for merchant screening
Define requirements for work/systems related to AML/CFT and fraud monitoring systems
Change operations and alter frameworks to reflect changes to laws and ordinances
Conduct investigations of incidents when they occur, decide policy for response, and work together/formulate reports with other teams
Bold Challenges
Utilize creativity to handle risk and solve issues with regards to AML/CFT, at a FinTech company powered by cutting-edge technology
Gain experience working together with the management and business teams to establish AML/CFT management frameworks and start a new business
Manage AML/CFT risk as it arises for Mercari’s marketplace app (17M users per month) and other businesses, as part of a small team of dedicated professionals
Collaborate with other companies on anti-fraud and AML/CFT measures, as well as make appearances at cashless payment industry events, advocate for change, and act on behalf of the industry
Required Experience
A strong, shared belief in Mercari and Merpay’s missions and values
Experience working in AML/CFT and financial risk management for a bank, securities company, FX service provider, crypto-asset exchange, etc. (5 years experience or more)
Deep knowledge and understanding of AML/CFT or financial risk management
Strong interest in and understanding of finance-related business (especially FinTech)
Preferred Experience
Experience working at a venture or startup
Experience communicating with and conducting inspections alongside relevant authorities
Project management experience
Experience streamlining work tasks using RPA or other methods
Experience in data analysis using SQL or other platforms
Experience defining system and work process requirements related to AML and fraud detection

Proactive and capable of thinking independently for the good of the team
